Keeping Your Balance When the World Tilts: Lessons from the Symbiocene

Keeping Your Balance When the World Tilts: Lessons from the Symbiocene

Lately, the world feels like a heavy place to be a part of. Political chaos, rising idiocy in those who “rule” us, crime so often and so brutal, and so much more. We are overloaded with so much detail that we risk it becoming normal to us - which it shouldn't be.

The exhaustion is real. And not the kind you fix with a good night's sleep, but the bone-deep weariness that comes from watching from afar and feeling enraged and helpless.

You're not imagining it. And you're not weak for feeling it.

But here's what we've noticed: nature doesn't participate in our collective panic. It operates on a different frequency entirely. And maybe that's exactly what we need to remember when everything else feels like it's coming apart.

Trees weather storms without losing themselves.

A 200-year-old oak has witnessed more upheaval than any of us will in our lifetimes - wars, social collapse, rebuilding. Through it all, it continues doing what it does: growing, providing shelter, adapting to conditions without abandoning its essential nature.

The chaos around you is real. But you don't have to internalise it. You can be aware without being consumed. You can care deeply without letting it hollow you out.

Affirmation: "I remain grounded even when the world is not."

The ocean doesn't negotiate with every wave.

Some forces are simply not yours to control. You cannot reason with what is unreasonable and beyond you at the moment.

What you can do is choose where your energy goes. You may not be able to intervene in every crisis, and your rage will not mitigate every horror. Save that energy, save that emotion.

Discernment isn't apathy, it’s channeling your energy towards what can be changed, even if it’s just a little.

Affirmation: "I choose my battles with intention, not obligation."

Seasons change with or without our consent.

When you're in the thick of it, it's easy to forget that nothing stays static. Movements, regimes, violence - all of it will come and all of it will go.

This isn't dismissing the seriousness of what's happening. It's recognising that change is always on the horizon, and that different times will come. And somehow, we keep going.

Affirmation: "I trust and hope in the impermanence of this moment."

Stars become visible only in darkness.

When everything feels bleak, it's tempting to retreat and protect yourself. But darkness doesn’t swallow light. It can also reveal it, paving the way for more.

Your compassion, your refusal to become cynical, your small acts of humanity within your capacity become more visible when times are hard.

You don't have to shout to make a difference. You just have to keep showing up as yourself.

Affirmation: "I meet darkness with steady light."

The Practice of Letting Go

If your energy is depleted, you can’t fix the world. You cannot solve systemic problems by sacrificing your own stability. Your rage and fury will only fuel you to a certain point before it consumes you and those around you.

Step into nature and notice how it continues to work regardless of our chaos amidst it. You're allowed to do the same. Tend to what's in front of you, protect those around you, change what is within your reach.

The work continues. Nature continues. And so can you.
